Looking ahead to what's on deck for the Commodores this week

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Each week This Week on West End takes a closer look at what’s in store for the Commodores in the coming days.

Two Vanderbilt teams move into the national spotlight as the lacrosse program heads to Florida for the first round of the NCAA Tournament and the women’s golf squad tees off in Ohio in an NCAA Regional. Vandy track and field also looks to put its best foot forward at the SEC Championships.

Vandy baseball finishes a short homestand with a single game Tuesday before hitting the road for an important weekend series in Mississippi.

Here’s more on all the other happenings around West End this week:

Lacrosse

Vanderbilt received an at-large bid into the NCAA Tournament, its first trip to the national postseason since 2010.

The Commodores (12-6) will face Jacksonville (11-1) at 5:30 p.m. CT Friday in Gainesville, Florida, and the winner will face either Florida (16-2) – the No. 6 overall national seed – or Mercer (7-7) at 11 a.m. CT Sunday.

Vandy, 2-6 all-time in the NCAA Tournament, went 1-4 over its final five after an 11-2 start.

 

 

Women’s golf

Vandy tees off Monday morning at the Columbus Regional as part of the NCAA Tournament. The Commodores must finish in the top six after three rounds of 18 holes of stroke play to advance to the NCAA Championships later this month

Celina SattelkauAuston KimLouise YuMorgan BaxendaleTess Davenport and Jayna Choi will make the trip to the Buckeye State in hopes of helping Vanderbilt advance to the next stage. The Commodores are coming off a sixth-place finish at the SEC Championships last month.

Track and field

The Vanderbilt track and field begin competition at the SEC Championships on Thursday in College Station, Texas.

The heptathlon will jump start the meet for the Commodores at 1:20 p.m. Thursday while running events begin at 5:30 p.m. The heptathlon resumes at 1:35 p.m. Friday and running events start at 5 p.m. The final day of competition starts at 4 p.m.,with the awards ceremony scheduled for 8 p.m.

Vandy boasts four outdoor school records and a total of 25 top-10 performances. In a shortened indoor season, Vanderbilt broke a pair of program records and etched 17 new entries into the school record book which included 14 different student-athletes in nine different individual events and two relays.

The meet can be seen from 5:40-9:30 p.m. Thursday on SEC Network, from 4:35-9:30 p.m. on Friday and from 5-9 p.m. Saturday.

Baseball

Vanderbilt returned to its winning ways over the weekend with two victories over visiting Alabama. Sunday’s finale was rained out.

The Commodores (34-10, 16-7 SEC) go into next week 1/2-game behind Tennessee in the SEC East standings and have a tough three-game series at Ole Miss starting Friday. Vandy first hosts North Alabama (7-38) at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday before traveling to Mississippi.
