Looking ahead to what's on deck for the Commodores this week

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Each week This Week on West End takes a closer look at what’s in store for the Commodores in the coming days.

The last week of April will be a bit on the lighter side for the Commodores, but no less important

Vanderbilt soccer finally gets its NCAA Tournament shot Saturday in North Carolina. The defending SEC Tournament champions head to Cary, North Carolina for the national event.

Vandy baseball has another critical showdown, this time on the road at rival Florida. Vanderbilt track and field will also be in action this week and the women’s golf team will learn its NCAA fate.

Here’s more on all the other happenings around West End this week:

Soccer

Vanderbilt head coach Darren Ambrose will take his side to compete in the the 48-team College Cup starting this week. The Commodores (9-5-1) will face Penn State or Alabama State at 6 p.m. CT on May 1 in Cary, North Carolina.

Vandy sported a 1-1-1 mark over three contests in a month of action. They’re coming off a 0-0 draw at Duke on April 11.

Penn State sports a 10-2-1 record and went 9-1-1 inside the Big Ten. Alabama State went 8-2-2 overall and 6-0-1 against the Southwestern Athletic Conference.

Baseball

After taking 2 of 3 from Mississippi State over the weekend, Vandy has to prepare for another daunting challenge.

This weekend calls for a trip to Gainesville, Florida, where the Dores (31-7, 13-5 SEC) meet the Gators at 6:30 p.m. CT Friday, 5:30 p.m. Saturday and 2 p.m CT Sunday.

Vanderbilt is two games up on Florida (28-12, 11-7) in the SEC East one game up on Tennessee with 12 regular-season contests remaining.

Women’s golf

At 1 p.m. CT Wednesday the Vanderbilt women’s golf team will find out if its season continues into May – the NCAA women’s golf selection show will be airing on NCAA.com at that time.

Head coach Greg Allen’s squad recently finished sixth in stroke play at the SEC Championships before losing to Auburn in match play in the tournament’s quarterfinals. Vandy had three top-five finishes during the 2020-21 season.

Track and field

Vandy’s track and field squad will be in Jacksonville, Florida, for a two-day meet starting Wednesday.

The Commodores will try to build some momentum in their last meet before the 2021 SEC Championships (May 13-15). The last time out Vanderbilt won four events and posted five more all-time top 10 performances at the Black and Gold Invitational.
