This Week on West End

Looking ahead to what's on deck for the Commodores this week

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Each week This Week on West End takes a closer look at what’s in store for the Commodores in the coming days.

The Vanderbilt soccer team will start the week by learning its NCAA Tournament opponent during the sport’s selection show at noon Monday.

Vandy’s baseball team returns home for four games, including another important SEC series over the weekend, and the Commodore tennis teams begin their respective postseason runs. Vanderbilt men’s golf also starts the postseason later in the week.

Here’s more on all the other happenings around West End this week:

Soccer

Vanderbilt soccer will hope for the same postseason success it witnessed in November when it won four matches and the SEC Tournament championship.

The Commodores (9-5-1) sported a 1-1-1 mark over three contests in a month of action. They’re coming off a 0-0 draw at Duke on April 11.

Head coach Darren Ambrose and his team will gather and watch the NCAA’s selection show at noon Monday, a show streamed live on NCAA.com. The 2021 DI women’s soccer championship will take place from April 27-May 17 in Cary, North Carolina.

Baseball

Vanderbilt completed a 3-1 week Sunday in fine fashion by beating rival Tennessee 10-4 in Knoxville. The Dores (28-6, 11-4 SEC) took the three-game series from the Volunteers and come home in sole possession of first place in SEC’s East Division.

This week Vandy hosts Austin Peay (12-21) at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday before Mississippi State (27-8, 10-5) comes to town for a three-game series starting Friday. The series opener at 7 p.m. Friday can be seen on SEC Network while Saturday’s matchup will be televised by ESPNU.

Lacrosse

Vanderbilt had a nine-game winning streak snapped by dropping a pair of contests at Florida, a matchup of two top-20 ranked teams.

The schedule doesn’t get much easier this weekend for the Commodores (11-4, 6-2 AAC) when they host Temple for a two-game series at 2 p.m. Friday and 1 p.m. Sunday. The Owls (10-3, 6-2 AAC) have won six in a row and haven’t lost since March 21.

Men’s golf

The Southeastern Conference men’s golf championship begins Wednesday on St. Simon’s Island, Georgia, at the Sea Island Golf Club.

Vandy will be one of 14 teams competing in the competition. Head coach Scott Limbaugh’s squad has finished inside the top five in four straight tournaments coming into the postseason.

The championship will feature both stroke and match play with match play Saturday and Sunday. Three rounds of stroke play will occur the opening three days of the championship. The final round Sunday will be televised live on SEC Network.

Women’s tennis

Vanderbilt (13-8) heads to The University of Alabama Tennis Stadium in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, to begin its postseason run at 3 p.m. Tuesday.

The Commodores take on South Carolina (10-10) in the 10-7 matchup. South Carolina won the regular-season meeting 4-1 in South Carolina.

Vandy finished the 2021 campaign by dropping six of seven matches. Marcella Cruz leads the team in singles wins while Anessa Lee and Christina Rosca have teamed up to record 12 victories in doubles action.

Men’s tennis

Vanderbilt (6-15) heads to the Billingsley Tennis Center in Fayetteville, Arkansas, to begin its postseason run at 11 a.m. Monday.

The Commodores are the No. 13 seed and will look to upend No. 12 Arkansas (9-13). Vandy went 0-12 in league play this season.

Jeremie Casabon, George Harwell and Joubert Klopper led the Dores in singles victories this season with 13 each.
