This Week on West End

Looking ahead to what's on deck for the Commodores this week

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Each week This Week on West End takes a closer look at what’s in store for the Commodores in the coming days.

The Vanderbilt football team hopes to return to action after a postponed road trip to Georgia. Vandy is scheduled to host rival Tennessee at Vanderbilt Stadium on Saturday.

Both Vanderbilt basketball teams will look to return to action as well and have home games lined up inside Memorial Gymnasium. In Texas, Vanderbilt’s Auston Kim is set to compete at the U.S. Women’s Open.

Here’s more of all the other happenings around West End this week:

Football

Vanderbilt was all set Saturday to head to the University of Georgia for its final road trip of the season, but COVID-19 issues forced the Commodores to rescheduled that contest to Dec. 19.

Now all eyes turn toward arch-rival Tennessee who is planning on coming to town for a 3 p.m. kickoff at Vanderbilt Stadium. Vandy (0-8, 0-8 SEC) and the Volunteers have met 114 times previously and the Black and Gold has won three of the previous four meetings.

Tennessee (2-6, 2-6 SEC) has dropped six in a row since a 2-0 start and dropped a 31-19 decision to No. 6 Florida on Saturday in Knoxville.

Men’s basketball

It will have been nearly two weeks since the Commodores have been able to take the court for head coach Jerry Stackhouse, but they hope to get back out under the Memorial Gym lights at 1 p.m. Sunday against Mississippi Valley State (0-5).

Vandy opened the season Nov. 27 with a 77-71 win over Valparaiso at home and has not played since due to COVID-19 issues.

A scheduled game Friday against North Carolina Central has been canceled.

Women’s basketball

The Vandy women’s team hopes to play its first home game of the 2020-21 season as it is scheduled to welcome East Tennessee State (1-1) to Memorial Gymnasium at 7 p.m. Tuesday.

Head coach Stephanie White’s team dropped its season-opener Saturday in an 82-74 setback at Arkansas Little Rock. Koi Love had 24 points and 10 rebounds in that contest and newcomer Enna Pehadzic scored 17.

Vanderbilt is also scheduled to travel across the state Sunday for a 2 p.m. CT matchup at Chattanooga (0-1).

Women’s golf

Kim, a Vanderbilt junior, will be making her second U.S. Women’s Open appearance starting Thursday when she competes at the Champions Golf Club in Houston, Texas.

Live coverage of the event can be seen on PeacockTV.com and the Golf Channel as Kim tries to better a 7-over performance in 2019 which saw her miss the cut going into the weekend.
