NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Junior Bridget Stammel and sophomore Valeria Ray of the Vanderbilt women’s tennis team received Academic All-District honors, announced by College Sports Communicators (CSC) on Tuesday.

To be eligible for the honor, players must compete in more than half of the team’s dual matches while maintaining a GPA above 3.5. Both Stammel and Ray played in all 27 of the team’s dual matches; Stammel finished with a 3.85 GPA while Ray had a 3.83 GPA.

Stammel concluded her third season 18-7, going 12-5 against SEC opponents. The Dallas, Texas native secured four ranked wins this season; she defeated No. 41 Emma Jackson of Duke 7-5, 6-3 in her highest ranked victory of the season. Stammel won the Ohio Valley Regional Championships in singles, helping her climb to as high as No. 26 in the ITA singles rankings. She reached No. 64 in the doubles rankings partnered with Ray.

Ray, in her second season out of Miami, Florida, produced the most overall singles wins in the SEC throughout the regular season. She finished the year with a 17-7 dual match record, including 9-6 in SEC play, to go along with five ranked victories. Her season was highlighted by a 17-match win streak that included a 1-6, 7-5, 7-6 (6) takedown of No. 15 Nicole Khirin, helping Vanderbilt secure a 5-2 victory over No. 2 Texas A&M. She achieved high ITA rankings of No. 56 in singles and No. 64 in doubles alongside Stammel. The selection extends Ray’s awards list after earning All-SEC Second Team honors this season and SEC All-Freshman Team recognition last year.
