Souza Receives Weekly Honors

Vanderbilt attacker Maddie Souza capped off an impressive week by garnering American Athletic Conference Freshman of the Week honors, it was announced on Tuesday.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Vanderbilt attacker Maddie Souza capped off an impressive week by garnering American Athletic Conference Freshman of the Week honors, it was announced on Tuesday.

Souza recorded her first-career hat trick in a three-goal performance in Vanderbilt’s 22-15 win against UConn last Saturday. All three of her goals came on just three shots.

She also added an assist to tie a career-high four points. Souza became the fourth Commodore to win Freshman of the Week this season, following Bri Gross (twice) and Callie Sundin (once).

Sophie Furlong also earned honors this week as she was named to the AAC Weekly Honor Roll for the third time this year. Against UConn, she scored a game-high five goals to lead a Commodore offense that scored a season-high 22 goals.

Furlong scored on every single one of her shots against UConn. She also had a personal-best two assists for a career-high seven points. Furlong even added three ground balls and one draw control.

With the win over UConn, the Commodores secured a berth to the AAC Tournament. The Commodores will head to the postseason for the first time since 2013.

Vanderbilt hits the road this weekend to face Cincinnati on Saturday at noon CT.
