Soccer Ties Wisconsin in Opener

ATHENS, Ga. –Vanderbilt soccer opened its 2007 season with a 0-0 tie against Wisconsin in the first game of the Nike Invitational Friday afternoon at the Turner Soccer Complex.

The Commodores (0-0-1) dominated the match statistically, holding a 23-9 shot advantage including 11 shots on goal.

Freshman forward Molly Kinsella led VU with seven shots, four on goal, with Megan Forester and Lindsay Ratterman chipping in with two shots on goal each.

Freshman goalkeeper Rachel Bachtel was in net the entire game and recorded a shutout with four saves in her first collegiate match.

Junior goalkeeper Jamie Klages, a transfer from Midwest power Nebraska, recorded 10 saves in 110 minutes of work for the Badgers (0-0-1). Four different players had shots on goal for Wisconsin: Katy Meuer, Taryn Francel, Shannon Terry and Ann Eshun.

It was the second straight season opening tie for the Commodores as they tied Colorado last season in Nashville. It is the third consecutive tie dating back to the final two games of 2006 against South Carolina and Clemson in the SEC and NCAA tournaments respectively.

Georgia and Texas Tech will play later tonight with the Commodores back in action on Sunday against the Red Raiders at 10 a.m.
