Soccer falls to Georgia, 2-0

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Vanderbilt women’s soccer team dropped a 2-0 decision Friday to Southeastern Conference rival Georgia.

Both of the Bulldogs goals came in the first 45 minutes of play. Georgia’s leading scorer, Alexa Newfield, put the Dogs on the board in the 29th minute, connecting from distance on a shot that snuck in over VU’s drawn out goalkeeper, junior Jessica Amlaw.

A pair of first-half substitutes connected for UGA’s second tally. Madison Meyers dribbled into VU’s penalty area before passing to Meghan Gibbons, whose volley was deflected by Amlaw but still found the inside of the back post.

In the second half, the Commodores were able to earn more possession of the ball, and increased their shot total from one to five. Junior Dana Schwartz led the Commodores with three shots.

With 23 minutes remaining in the game, freshman Brittanie Barbero made her first appearance in goal in nearly a month. The Frisco, Texas native made a wonderful save of a near-post header in the 79th minute to prevent Georgia from taking a 3-0 advantage.

The Commodores will look to bounce back on Sunday, Oct. 16, when in-state rival Tennessee visits the VU Soccer Complex. The Lady Vols will also be hungry for a win after losing at Kentucky, 1-0, in double overtime tonight. For those unable to attend in person, the game will be televised by CSS and available on ESPN3.
