Dec. 1, 2009

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Vanderbilt soccer was honored with the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Team Academic Award for the 2008-09 academic year.

It marks the seventh consecutive year the Commodores have received the award dating back to 2003. VU was one of nine Southeastern Conference soccer teams that posted grade point averages of 3.0 or better. The nine teams honored are the second-most in SEC history. In 2003 the league had 10 teams receive the NSCAA Team Academic Award.

“I am extremely proud of the hard work our girls put into the classroom,” said Vanderbilt head coach Ronnie Woodard. “It is always a challenge and a goal for them to excel both athletically and academically and our girls are a great representation of what being a Vanderbilt student-athlete is all about.”

Vanderbilt had the highest team GPA in the league at 3.32. Also recognized were
Alabama (3.19 GPA), Arkansas (3.29 GPA), Auburn (3.12 GPA), Florida (3.31 GPA), Georgia (3.28 GPA), Kentucky (3.28 GPA), Ole Miss (3.22 GPA) and South Carolina (3.25 GPA).

The Commodores recently completed the season with an 11-8-1 record and SEC tournament appearance.
