Vanderbilt will open postseason play with a first round matchup against South Carolina in the SEC Tournament Wednesday night at 7:30 p.m. at the Orange Beach Soccer Complex in Orange Beach, Ala. If the Commodores win, they would advance into the semifinals for the third straight year and would take on the winner of the Georgia-Florida contest.

Series History

vs. South Carolina: Vanderbilt leads 11-1-1 all-time, including a 3-0 win on Oct. 8 in Nashville. This is the first time the team’s have met in the SEC tournament. The Commodores have not lost in the last six meetings (6-0-1) dating back to the 1999 season.

South Carolina is ranked sixth in the Southeast Region by the NSCAA and eighth by Soccer Buzz.

Vanderbilt is ranked 18th by TD. They are ranked seventh in the Central Region by the NSCAA and eighth by SB.

The Coaches

VU’s Ronnie Coveleskie is 68-60-23 in her eighth season overall as a head coach and is 53-39-21 in six seasons in Nashville.

South Carolina’s Shelley Smith is 56-48-14 in her sixth season in Columbia and is 97-83-16 in 10 seasons overall.

Team Tidbits

Vanderbilt finished tied for second in the SEC, its highest finish since finishing in a tie for second in 1998 … the Commodores are the four seed for the third straight year and have advanced to the SEC semifinals the two years prior … the loss to Kentucky last Friday snapped a two-game winning streak against the Wildcats … VU has gone 6-0-1 against South Carolina since 1999, including a 3-0 win over the Gamecocks earlier this season in Nashville. Wednesday’s meeting will be the first between the schools in SEC tourney history … The Commodores finished the SEC campaign with a plus 10 goal differential, tied with Florida for No. 1 in the league. VU also finished the SEC regular season as the leader in shots, shots per game, shots on goal, shots on goal per game.

Scouting South Carolina

South Carolina is 11-5-4 overall and 5-2-4 in SEC play after finishing the regular season with a 1-1 tie against conference champ Florida in Columbia last Friday. After falling 3-0 to Vanderbilt on Oct. 8, the Gamecocks finished the regular season with a 2-0-3 ledger.

Goalkeeper Laura Armstrong finished the regular season with a 0.62 goals against average to go along with five shutouts.

Felicia Schroeder leads the team with seven goals (five gamewinners) and two assists for 16 points.

USC is making its first tournament since the 2003 season when the team lost to No. 1 seed 1-0 in the opening round of the tournament.
