NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Vanderbilt women’s tennis team will open conference play against LSU on Friday at the Currey Tennis Center.
The Commodores then head out to play Mississippi State on Sunday in Starkville, Mississippi.
“I’m excited to begin play in this incredible conference. The team is ready to compete and are thrilled to open the SEC schedule at home,” Vanderbilt head coach Geoff Macdonald said. “I hope a great crowd can come to the Currey Tennis Center to support the team.”
No. 20 Vanderbilt will enter its first SEC match sporting a 4-2 record after upsetting No. 10 Ohio State 5-2 last Sunday at home.
Senior Christina Rosca clinched the match over the Buckeyes at No. 1 singles with a 6-4, 2-6, 6-4 upset over No. 11 Shiori Fukuda. With that victory, Rosca was named SEC Player of the Week.
Freshman Anna Ross was named SEC Freshman of the Week after defeating Kolie Allen 6-4, 4-6, 6-1 to mark her third victory at home. Ross currently boasts an undefeated record at the Currey.
In this week’s Oracle ITA rankings, Commodore pair Rosca and Georgia Drummy mark their spot at No. 18 in doubles followed by Rosca at No. 18 in singles and Drummy at No. 31.
The Commodores welcome a 7-2 LSU team coming off of a 4-1 win over Rice. Friday’s match will mark the Tigers first SEC match of the season.
Last season against the Tigers, Vanderbilt clinched the match 4-3 in Baton Rouge. Vanderbilt leads the series with a 29-14 record against LSU.
On Sunday, Vanderbilt will take on a 6-3 Mississippi State squad. The Bulldogs enter the match after a sweep over Alabama State 4-0 in Montgomery, Alabama.
In the last matchup between the Dores and Bulldogs, Vanderbilt held Mississippi State to only one point to claim the match 4-1 in Nashville.
