SEC Honors Bleday

Right fielder takes home weekly honors

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Right fielder JJ Bleday’s historic week continued into Monday as the junior was named SEC Co-Player of the Week alongside LSU’s Chris Reid.

The Panama City Beach, Florida, product became the first Commodore since Aaron Westlake in 2010 to homer in four straight games. He drove in 10 runs last week and took over the SEC lead by belting four homers in as many games.

Bleday set a new career high with five RBIs and two homers on Tuesday against Lipscomb, and he recorded three multi-RBI games and scored a combined six runs in four games. He moved his hit streak to eight games and streak of RBIs in a game to five consecutive.

Vanderbilt matched its season-high win streak at seven games, defeating Lipscomb on Tuesday and taking the first two against Tennessee over the weekend. Vandy batted .340 and scored 35 runs alongside eight home runs in four games.

Bleday becomes the third Commodore to be recognized by the SEC this season. Right-hander Drake Fellows was named SEC Pitcher of the Week last Monday after tossing a complete-game shutout against No. 14 Florida. Austin Martin was tabbed the league’s player of the week on Feb. 18 after reaching base in 12 of 16 plate appearances on opening weekend.

No. 5 Vanderbilt caps its four-game homestand on Tuesday, hosting Western Kentucky at 6:30 p.m. from Hawkins Field. The matchup will be streamed on the SEC Network Plus and can be heard on WNSR 560 AM/95.9 FM and nationally on VUCommodores.com.
