Schwartz's two goals sink MTSU

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – Senior Dana Schwartz recorded the Commodores’ first multi-goal game of the 2012 season to help her Vanderbilt women’s soccer side earn a 2-0 win over MTSU on Friday at the Dean A. Hayes Track and Soccer Stadium.

Both of Schwartz’s goals were assisted by freshman Cheyna Williams, who has notched points for the Commodores in each of the last three games.

Vanderbilt got on the board in the 20th minute. Freshman Andie Lakin played a ball down the left side in to Williams, who beat a defender before crossing the ball to the corner of the six-yard box. Schwartz got on the end of the pass and finished low past the near post to give Vandy a 1-0 lead.

The insurance goal came in the 52nd minute. A nice team buildup freed Williams on the left side of the box, but MTSU Jessica Gilchrist came out and made a nice save of Williams’ shot. The rebound scooted across the box where Schwartz again met the ball and delivered a low bullet into the back of the net.

Sophomore goalkeeper Alexa Levick made five saves to earn her second shutout of the season and improve the Commodores to 2-1-1 on the year.

Vanderbilt, which plays nine of its first 11 games on the road this season, will finally play host to its home opener on Sunday when Gonzaga visits the VU Soccer Complex for a 1 p.m. CT kickoff. Live video and live statistics will be available on this site.
