NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Jessica Hiskey scored her first goal of the year in the 43rd minute to help her Ole Miss side to a 1-0 victory over the Vanderbilt women’s soccer team Friday at the VU Soccer Complex.
Hiskey’s strike came off an assist from Erin Emerson after the Commodores failed to sufficiently clear a Rebel free kick. From 24 yards out on the left side of the field, Hiskey struck a ball with her left foot that skidded along the wet ground, inside the far post, and into the side-netting.
The team’s combined for only six shots on goal Friday, with VU’s Alexa Levick making three saves while Rebel Kelly McCormick made two stops. Friday’s game marked the first time this season that the Commodores have been shut out in back-to-back contests.
Taylor Richardson was one of six Commodores that played the entire 90 minutes, but the sophomore moved to center forward in the 29th minute and would play there the remainder of the contest. She led a Vanderbilt charge in the second half that saw the Commodores win six corner kicks and create a number of dangerous chances. Sophomore Ashley Oswald took a shot in the 68th minute from a similar position to Hiskey’s scoring strike, but McCormick was able to hold on to the left-footed effort.
Vanderbilt entered the game in a tie for sixth place in the league, but Ole Miss now jumps ahead of the Commodores with its 12 points. Only four games remain in the 2012 regular season, and the top 10 teams in the Southeastern Conference will advance to the SEC Tournament in Orange Beach, Ala.
Friday’s game was designated as Vanderbilt’s “Power in Pink” game, as the Commodores wore pink jerseys to help raise awareness for the fight against breast cancer. (Photo by Steve Green)
