Commodores secure WNIT bid

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Vanderbilt has been selected to compete in the postseason Women’s National Invitation Tournament.

“The goal is to play for championships and play in the postseason,” said head coach Shea Ralph. “I’m really excited for our team, we’ve had some highs and lows this year but we’ve continued to battle and grow. I know our entire team wants to continue to play, so the fact that we have another championship that we can compete for is extremely exciting, not only for our team but for our program.”

Game day, tipoff time and broadcast details will be announced soon.

Vandy is one of the 64 teams in the WNIT field, which includes 32 teams that receive automatic berths and 32 at-large selections.

“We want to be able to compete for whatever championship there is to win, and and we understand that we can’t skip steps,” said Ralph. “To be in our first year here as a program, this is a huge step. We are extremely excited and motivated to go out and compete and give our very best.”

This is the first time the Commodores will compete in the postseason since 2014 when Vanderbilt faced Arizona State in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament. It’s Vanderbilt’s first WNIT appearance since 1984.

Round 1 will begin Wednesday and concludes Friday with the second round taking place March 19-22. The WNIT championship is slated for April 2.

The postseason Women’s National Invitation Tournament began in 1998 with 16 teams playing for a postseason crown. The event has undergone four expansions throughout which its mission has remained the same: to give deserving teams a quality opportunity to play exciting games for a postseason title.
