Vanderbilt Honors Its Seniors

No. 20 Women’s Soccer Blanks Kentucky, 1-0 10/28/2005 Tape-delay broadcast to air Sunday, Oct. 30, at 1 pm. CT Nashville, Tenn. – Vanderbilt closed out its regular season schedule with a 1-0 win over Kentucky in Southeastern Conference action Friday night at the VU Soccer Complex. The Commodores improved to 15-3-1 overall and 8-2-1 in conference play. The team also finished the year 9-1 at home. VU ended the regular season in a tie for third place overall in the conference with Florida, but will be the fourth seed in the tournament next week due to the head-to-head loss to the Gators earlier this year. Sophomore Meredith Kohn’s goal at the 28:24 mark was the only offense Vanderbilt needed. She scored her second goal of the season off an assist by senior midfielder Lauren Mitchell. Mitchell was one of four seniors honored prior to the match. Defender Ashley Duffy, midfielder Meghan Habig and forward Kelci Hegg were the other seniors recognized for their achievements at Vanderbilt. “It was great for our seniors to go out at home with a bang,” said head coach Ronnie Coveleskie Hill. The VU defense once again stifled the opposition’s offensive attack, limiting the Wildcats to just five shots in the game with none of them on goal. Junior goalkeeper Tyler Griffin recorded her 12th shutout of the season, tying her with Christy Barringer for No. 1 on the school’s single season list. As a team, the Commodores extended their school record shutout mark to 14 on the year. At halftime the team honored junior defender Monica Buff with the David J. Elia 110 Award. The award is in memory of the father of former Vanderbilt player, Kate Elia. Mr. Elia, an exuberant and unfailing fan of the Commodore Women’s Soccer Program, was killed in a car accident the day after Kate’s sophomore season ended. The 110 Award recognizes the one player, voted by her teammates, who puts in the extra effort to be the best player she can be and who continuously strives to work for the betterment of her team, modeling Mr. Elia’s own work ethic as a collegiate basketball athlete. Vanderbilt will face the fifth seed Georgia in the first round of the SEC tournament on Thursday. The Commodores will be looking to avenge a 2-1 loss to UGA in Nashville on Oct. 16.
