SEC Rivals on Deck

No. 7 Vanderbilt women's tennis concludes its regular season on the road facing in-state rival No. 17 Tennessee on Friday at the Goodfriend Tennis Center and second-ranked Georgia on Sunday at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – No. 7 Vanderbilt women’s tennis concludes its regular season on the road facing in-state rival No. 17 Tennessee on Friday at the Goodfriend Tennis Center and second-ranked Georgia on Sunday at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex.

Coming off of a weekend SEC sweep, the Commodores enter Friday’s match with a 14-5 overall record. In conference matches, the Dores hold a 9-2 record with respective losses coming to No. 5 South Carolina and No. 16 Texas A&M.

In this week’s ITA Rankings, the Commodores feature five players in the top-125 singles, led by seventh-ranked senior Fernanda Contreras.

The Dores sport a four-match win streak while facing an 18-5 Lady Vol team.

Tennessee is currently riding a six-match winning streak after defeating No. 44 Arkansas, 4-1, last weekend in Fayetteville, Arkansas.

Friday’s match-up marks the 61st meeting between the rivals with the Vols leading the series, 34-27. Last season, the Dores shut out the Vols, 4-0, at the Vanderbilt Currey Tennis Center.

“Facing Tennessee in Knoxville is always a great rivalry and strong match. We’ve really gained a lot of experience through a tough SEC campaign so we are excited to face two highly ranked SEC teams this weekend to conclude the regular season,” said head coach Geoff Macdonald.

On Sunday, the Commodores look to seek revenge over No. 2 Georgia after falling short to the Bulldogs, 4-3, in the quarterfinals of the ITA National Team Indoors in February.

The Bulldogs currently lead the SEC by remaining undefeated with a 19-0 overall record and 11-0 conference record.

Georgia is led by the nation’s top-ranked singles player in Katarina Jokic. The sophomore boasts an 18-3 overall singles record.

In the last matchup between the top SEC teams, Vanderbilt outlasted Georgia, 4-1, in Nashville.

“This is what you train and play for. The opportunity to play in this conference is amazing and we are excited to rematch a top-ranked Georgia team to wrap up the regular season,” said Macdonald.

This weekend’s matches will be the final two before the reigning SEC regular season champions travel to College Station, Texas, on Wednesday where the Commodores will look to continue their reign at the league champs.
