NASHVILLE, Tenn. – No. 2 Vanderbilt women’s tennis took on No. 3 North Carolina Saturday with the Tar Heels continuing their winning streak by defeating the Commodores, 5-2.
North Carolina earned a quick lead over Vanderbilt, clinching the doubles point with wins on Courts 1 and 2 with both Commodore pairs falling short 6-2, 6-2.
Competing on Court 1 in singles play for the Dores, senior Fernada Contreras battled against second-ranked Makenna Jones. Contreras earned a dominate start over Jones, taking down the Tar Heel 6-3. Maintaining momentum in the second set Contreras conquered the upset closing out the final set, 6-3.
Continuing singles play, North Carolina earned three more matches ultimately clinching the match for the Tar Heels, 4-1.
Play continued as both coaches decided to complete all matches with Gerogia Drummy and Summer Dvorak remaining on Court 3 and Court 6, respectively, for the Dores.
Freshman Drummy secured the Dores second and final match point battling against North Carolina’s Sara Daavettila.
Drummy split sets with Daavettila winning the first set 7-6 (2) but fell short in the second set, 3-6. Bouncing back in the third set, Drummy held Daavettila to one game defeating the Tar Heel, 6-1.
Head coach Geoff Macdonald was proud of the way his team fought, but sees room for improvement heading into Sunday’s match against No. 12 Northwestern.
“I thought the team started slow today but came back to play strong singles matches. Fernanda earned a fantastic upset over Jones on Court 1 followed by Georgia winning a great victory on Court 3 after falling in the second set. I have to give credit to North Carolina, they are a great team and have a strong season ahead of them. I am looking forward to taking the court tomorrow against a strong Northwestern team,” said Macdonald.
The Commodores battle Northwestern Sunday at noon.
The match will take place at the Vanderbilt Currey Tennis Center and admission to the event is free.
