ATLANTA, Ga. – The Commodores defeated Georgia State, 3-0, on Sunday at the Turner Soccer Complex to improve their winning streak to seven games.
Vanderbilt’s (7-1) seven-game win streak is the program’s longest since 2005, when the team won 11 games in a row. Sunday’s win was Vanderbilt’s fourth-straight shutout, which matches the longest streak since the 2009 team recorded four shutouts in a row.
In the course of Vanderbilt’s winning streak, they have posted five shutouts and outscored their opponents, 18-2.
The Commodores were on the attack right from the jump in today’s game. In the first half, they outshot the Panthers, 8-1, and six of those shots were on goal. The Dores finished the game with 12 shots and nine on goal. They didn’t allow a shot on goal all game.
The scoring started in the 19th minute when Haley Hopkins got her third assist of the season to set up Grace Jackson. Jackson then found the back of the net for her second goal of the season.
The Dores would strike again in the 51st minute. Hopkins was again on the offensive as she took a breakaway into the opposing goalie box. She was fouled on the play and set up a penalty kick for herself. Hopkins’ penalty shot deflected off the post and into the goal for her team-high fifth goal this season.
Olivia Simmons got in on the scoring action in the 61st minute when she notched her second goal of the season. Simmons caught a deflection off a Panther player and found herself in the middle of the box. She sent a shot right past the goalie for her second goal of the season.
Lauren Demarchi got the start for the Dores in goal and she continued to play the first half. She moved to 6-0 on the season after seeing little action in the game. Taiana Tolleson relieved her in the second half and also saw little action in the game.
