MG finishes sixth at Carmel Cup

PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. – The Commodore men’s golf team carded a final-round 352 on Sunday at the Carmel Cup at legendary Pebble Beach Golf Links and finished the three-day tournament in sixth place with a final total of 1,065 (361-352-352).  Senior Will Gordon led Vanderbilt for the event, finishing in a tie for fifth with a final score of 204 (68-69-67).

Vanderbilt also received a top-10 performance from junior John Augenstein, who carded a three-round score of 207 (68-69-70) and finished in eight place.

“First of all, it was another great week at Pebble and we are thankful to have the opportunity to play in a tournament like this,” said Vanderbilt head coach Scott Limbaugh.  “It means a lot for our program. We talked last night about playing to a standard today and learning how to stay in the fight. The boys did a much better job of that. Will played very solid this week from start to finish. I am also very proud of John and the way he battled today and played the back nine so well.

Oklahoma held off a charging Georgia team to come away with the team championship by two shots with a final score of 1,034 (340-336-358).  Matthew Wolff of Oklahoma State won medalist honors with a 17-under par, 199 (65-66-68).

“The scoreboard certainly wasn’t what we wanted this week, but early in the year it’s not the only indicator,” said Limbaugh.  “We absolutely have a lot of work to do and we understand that, but there were some positives as well and we kind of see where we have to improve. How this team responds to this week will say a lot about our leadership and the kind of team we can become. College golf is all about how you improve day to day and tournament to tournament so that’s what our focus has to be on moving forward.”

Vanderbilt returns to action September 24-25 at the Shoal Creek Invitational in Birmingham, Ala.
