MG T-6th at Carmel Cup after round one

PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. – The Vanderbilt men’s golf team carded a first-round team score of 361 and is in a tie for sixth at the Carmel Cup at the legendary Pebble Beach Golf Links after play on Friday.  Senior Will Gordon and junior John Augenstein led the way for the Commodores, with each carding a first-round 68, which places the duo in a tie for fifth on the individual leader board.

Vanderbilt also counted a one-over 73 from freshman Reid Davenport, a two-over 74 from sophomore Harrison Ott, and a six-over 78 from senior Patrick Martin.

The Commodores, who are playing with some of the nation’s best teams, are tied with Texas Tech and Mississippi State heading into the second round Saturday.

“It was fun to get started again,” said head coach Scott Limbaugh.  “The beginning of any journey gets you excited and nervous. We understand that we get to create our story and that confidence is earned and nothing is guaranteed.”

The 2017 national champions, Oklahoma, leads the event after firing a 20-under par, 340, and the Sooners have a ten-shot lead on the 2018 national champions, Oklahoma State.

“I was very proud of Will and John today,” said Limbaugh.  “They both played very solid all day. Obviously, the outcome as a team was not what we wanted and we need to be better tomorrow.  I know we battled to the very end and that’s a great building block. We also get to learn about our resiliency tomorrow.”

The second round of the tournament continues on Saturday with tee times beginning at 7 a.m. Pacific time.
