Three Commodore men’s golfers, senior Will Gordon, junior John Augenstein and sophomore Harrison Ott, advanced to the match-play portion of the U.S. Amateur on Tuesday in Pebble Beach, Calif., after Gordon finished in a tie for fourth with a total of four-under, 139 (69-70), Augenstein carded a two-round score of one-under, 142 (72-70) to end the stroke-play part of the tournament in a tie for 10th, and Ott finished with a two-round score of three-over, 146 (73-73), which tied him for 46th.  The first two rounds of the tournament took place at legendary Pebble Beach Golf Links and Spyglass Hills Golf Club.

The top 64 players from the first two rounds of stroke play advance to match play.

Senior Patrick Martin, who finished with a four-over, 147 (71-76), will compete in a playoff on Wednesday morning for a spot in the match-play festivities, which begin later in the day Wednesday.  Martin, who finished in a tie for 64th, will compete with 24 other players at 7:30 a.m. Pacific time for one match-play spot.

Gordon, who has played Pebble Beach in every year of his career with the Commodores, used his familiarity with the grounds to his advantage.

“I think it’s helping me a lot,” said Gordon, who is playing in his third consecutive U.S. Amateur.  “I think just in stroke play you kind of just make sure you’re hitting confident shots to conservative targets. I think also like our college tournament we played — I played Pebble a lot. Be back here in two weeks. I think that helped me out a lot yesterday just being able to stay poised and know which holes you can attack the golf course.”

Television coverage of the event begins on Wednesday on FS1 at 4 p.m. CT from Pebble Beach.
