Augenstein wins Players Amateur

July 16, 2018

Vanderbilt rising junior John Augenstein captured the individual championship at the Players Amateur in Ohatie, S.C., one of the nation’s premiere amateur tournaments, and earned an exemption into the PGA Tour’s RBC Heritage Classic April 15-21, 2019 at Harbourtown in Hilton Head, S.C. Augenstein posted four rounds of 68 or better, and checked in with a four-under par, 67 on Sunday to win the event by four shots. His final round consisted of birdies in three of his first eight holes and only one bogey. Augenstein went 66-67-68-67 for the week.

Augenstein has had one of the best spring and summers in amateur golf in 2018, claiming the Players Amateur, finishing tied for fourth at the Sunnehanna Amateur, finishing tied for sixth at the Northeast Amateur and tied for ninth at the NCAA Championship. Augenstein will attempt to qualify for the U.S. Amateur in Cincinnati, Ohio on July 17, but after his stellar summer, he could move into the top 50 by August 5 on the World Amateur Golf Rankings and be exempt into the event, which takes place August 13-19 at Pebble Beach Golf Links and Spyglass Hill Golf Course.
