MG remains T-5th in Kissimmee

Second Round Results

KISSIMMEE, Fla. – Vanderbilt senior and SEC Player of the Year Theo Humphrey carded a three-under par, 69, in the second round of play at the NCAA Kissimmee Regional to lead the Commodores to a six-under par 282 total for the day, which places the Commodores in a tie for fifth overall with Colorado State and North Carolina heading into the final round of play Wednesday. The top five teams advance to the NCAA Championship May 25-30 in Stillwater, Okla.

The Commodores trail fourth-place South Florida by two shots, third-place Kent State by five, second-place UCF by nine, and team leader Florida by 14 heading into Wednesday’s play.

“We certainly wanted to come out excited to play and get off to a fast start and we were able to do that which I thought was big,” said Vanderbilt head coach Scott Limbaugh. “It was good to see Theo playing well and hitting good shots today. I definitely think that gave us some energy. Will played extremely well, handled his emotions well, and gave us another solid round. I was proud of how he responded after his triple bogey and birdied his final hole. Patrick was solid all day and really has done a nice job staying focused on his process. I thought the front nine, our back nine, was certainly a little tougher today and we didn’t do as good of a job as we needed to staying in the moment. Momentum is so important and fighting to keep it and/or get it when you don’t have it is really what it’s all about. We need to do a little better job of that tomorrow than we did today. We were really close to playing a really good round.”

Vanderbilt counted Humphrey’s 69, a two-under par 70 from junior Patrick Martin, a one-under 71 from junior Will Gordon, and an even-par 72 from redshirt freshman Mason Greenberg. Martin is the Commodores’ leader after two rounds with a five-under par, 139, which puts him in a tie for sixth individually for the tournament. Gordon and Greenberg are both in a tie for 18th with a two-under, 142 total.

Martin registered five birdies and two bogeys in his first trip around the Watson Course on Monday. Other counting scores for Vanderbilt came from Mason Greenberg, who shot a two-under par, 70 (T-16), a one-under 71 from junior Will Gordon (T-21), and a one-over par 73 from sophomore John Augenstein (T-41).

Martin trails a trio of players, UCF’s Kyler Tate, Florida’s Andy Zhang, and North Carolina’s Austin HItt, by three shots for the individual lead.

The third and final round of the Kissimmee Regional will take place Wednesday morning in a shotgun start which will begin at 7 a.m. CT.

“I know I like this team and I trust the leadership,” added Limbaugh. “When things are hard it makes you better. We have another opportunity tomorrow and we need to embrace it. We need to commit to each shot, have fun, and just go play Vanderbilt golf!”
