CABO SAN LUCAS, Mexico – The third-ranked Vanderbilt men’s golf team carded a second-round team total of 286 on Monday and is currently in 11th place at the Querencia Cabo Collegiate in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico after two days of competition. Senior Theo Humphrey is the team’s leader after two rounds at the par-71, 6,928-yard Querencia Golf Club with a two-round score of 136 (68-68), good for third place on the individual leader board.
On Monday, the Commodores also counted a 70 from junior Patrick Martin, a 71 from junior Will Gordon and a 77 from sophomore John Augenstein.
“We were a little better today than we were yesterday,” said Vanderbilt head coach Scott Limbaugh. “I thought we had a chance to have a really good round, but just made too many big numbers. This course kind of lures you into worrying about the outcomes, instead of being able to just stay focused on executing the shot at hand. That really comes down to discipline, and as a team, we haven’t shown a lot of that this week. Theo once again played great after a very tough start. Patrick and Will played solid and hung in there all day long which was big.”
Oklahoma State sits atop the team leader board after two rounds with a 10-under par, 558 (276-282), one shot better than second-place California.
Individually, Humphrey trails co-leaders Colin Morikawa of California and Matthew Wolff of Oklahoma State by three shots heading into the final round.
“Tomorrow is a great opportunity for us to take a step towards being the team we want to be,” said Limbaugh. “We must be excited and enthusiastic about playing tomorrow. I believe in this group and I believe in the leadership. It’s up to us to continue to try to play to our potential.”
The third and final round of the tournament concludes on Tuesday.
