First round complete in Cabo

First Round Results

CABO SAN LUCAS, Mexico – The third-ranked Vanderbilt men’s golf team finished their first round of the Querencia Cabo Collegiate in a tie for 11th with a team total of 296 in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico on Sunday. Senior Theo Humphrey was the team’s leader on the first day of play at the par-71, 6,928-yard Querencia Golf Club, carding a three-under par 71 and ending the round in a tie for third on the individual leader board.

Vanderbilt also counted a pair of three-over 74’s from junior Patrick Martin and sophomore John Augenstein, and a nine-over 80 from freshman Cooper Sears.

“I am really proud of Theo and how he responded today after the double bogey on 11,” said Vanderbilt head coach Scott Limbaugh. “His round was really big for our team. John was sick today and he showed some toughness just to get through the round. We weren’t sure if he was even gonna be able to play so he battled, which is who he is! However, our team had a tough day and we have to own this. We played the par 5s very poorly which is not who we are and is not acceptable.”

Oklahoma State sits atop the team leader board after the first round of play with an eight-under par, 276, five shots better than second-place California.

Individually, Humphrey, who is tied with Viktor Hovland of Oklahoma State and Jake Benson of Rice for third, trails individual leader Matthew Wolff of Oklahoma State by three shots.

“So I think, how we respond to this day moving forward this week will say a lot about the leadership of this team,” said Limbaugh. “It’s our next opportunity to prove the kind of team we can be. If you want to be a great team you have to be able to overcome adversity. It’s the tough part of any journey, but it’s a step you have to take if you want to be a Championship team.

“Tomorrow is important for us because it affects where we want to go as a team.”

The second round of the tournament continues on Monday.
