OXFORD, Miss. – The Vanderbilt women’s basketball team (6-17, 2-7 SEC) led from start to finish and secured their first SEC road win of the season with a 75-72 win over Ole Miss (11-11, 1-8 SEC) on Thursday in Oxford. Mississippi native Christa Reed led the way with 20 points – her fifth consecutive game in double figures.

How It Happened
First Quarter: Vanderbilt 24, Ole Miss 11
Vanderbilt opened the game strong and with an early 8-2 run forced Ole Miss to take a timeout. The Commodores spread the ball around and had four different players score through the first three minutes. The Commodores extended their lead to 17-6 with back-to-back triples from Cierra Walker, including one from West End. Madinah Muhammad snapped a nearly three-minute scoring drought for the Rebels with a triple but the visiting Commodores kept the pedal to the metal shooting a season-best 57 percent in the first period to take the early lead.
Second Quarter: Vanderbilt 39, Ole Miss 24
Ole Miss used an 8-0 run over 1:23 to cut the once 15-point lead to four points but a 5-0 spurt sparked by a pair from Newby followed by an old-fashioned three-point play from Kaleigh Clemons-Green pushed the lead back out to 31-19 at the 6:04 mark. Cierra Walker reached double figures for the 11th game with a bucket right before the media timeout. Cierra Walker, who drilled three triples in the first half, was hot from the field, shooting over 50 percent from the floor while Autumn Newby was a rebounding machine with six boards in the first half as the Dores took the halftime lead.
Third Quarter: Vanderbilt 60, Ole Miss 46
The Commodores kept up the defensive pressure as they started the third quarter and got a huge lift from senior and Mississippi native Christa Reed, who had seven points in the third quarter, including a big three-pointer to keep momentum with the Commodores. With Vanderbilt up 33-51, Erin Whalen drilled triple from the corner and Vanderbilt didn’t look back taking a 60-45 lead at the break.
Fourth Quarter: Vanderbilt 75, Ole Miss 72
Ole Miss made things interesting in the fourth quarter. The Commodores led by as many as 22 points in the second half but a triple from Alissa Alston cut the lead to nine points at the 6:24 mark and forced Vanderbilt to call a timeout. Out of the break, it was the Kayla Overbeck show as she recorded eight fourth quarter points and had 13 for the contest. Ole Miss’ Alissa Alston made things interesting with a three-point play late in the quarter and a triple form Torri Lewis made it 75-72 with 11 seconds left but Vanderbilt sealed the win by making some free throws down the stretch to win their first SEC road win.
Inside the Lane
-Vanderbilt moves to 33-16 in the all-time series and has won 10 of the last 12 meetings between the teams, including nine of the last 10. Stephanie White is 2-0 against Ole Miss.
-Christa Reed reached double figures for the fifth straight game with 20 points. It’s her second 20-point outing this season.
-Autumn Newby posted a team-best nine rebounds, just shy of her fifth game with double figures rebounds.
-Cierra Walker reached double figures for the fifth time in the last seven games with 13 points.
