Athens, Ga. – The Vanderbilt women’s tennis team opened day two of the Bulldog Classic on Saturday with doubles play followed by singles in the afternoon.
Commodore duo Christina Rosca and Emily Smith kicked off the action vs. Illinois’s Switkes/Duong, defeating the pair in a close 8-6 match.
Fernanda Contreras and Amanda Meyer hit the court to compete against No. 30 ranked Illinois’s duo Belaya/Novak. The Dores fell short in a tough 8-7 (1) defeat.
Dore pair Emma Kurtz and Carolyn Campana competed against Illionois’s Kawai/Rabinowitz, starting strong but ultimately falling short, 8-4.
Moving on to singles play, Vanderbilt earned three victories against the Georgia Bulldogs.
The country’s No. 7 ranked singles player, Vanderbilt’s Fernanda Contreras, competed against No. 4 ranked Bulldog freshman Lourdes Carle. Contreras clinched the first set in a 7-6 win followed by a domination in the second set to earn a straight-set victory, 7-6, 6-2.
Keeping up the Dores’ singles run, freshman Carolyn Campana bounced back from her doubles defeat by winning her match against No.77 ranked Morgan Coppoc in a straight-set victory, 6-2, 6-3.
Finally, sophomore Lauren Gish took the court to compete against UGA’s Alee Clayton. The Commodore sophomore earned a straight-set, 6-2, 6-4 win against the Bulldog.
The Dores begin the final day of the Bulldog Classic Sunday morning with doubles followed by singles play.
