Four Commodores named to region team

NASHVILLE – The Vanderbilt Commodores saw four athletes named to the United Soccer Coaches All-Southeast Region Team, it was announced on Tuesday. The four total submissions are the most in Vanderbilt history.

Haley Hopkins served as the team’s lone First Team selection while Nia Dorsey, Grace Jackson and Ella Shamburger all landed on the Second Team.

Hopkins, a redshirt freshman, led the Commodores in scoring with 14 goals and points with 35. She also tied for the team lead in assists with seven. She had five game-winners on the season, which also led the team.

Hopkins finished the season with the second-most goals and points in Commodore history for a freshman, trailing only Vanderbilt great Laura Koerner, who recorded 16 goals and 40 points in 1996. At season’s end, Hopkins earned SEC Freshman of the Year honors.

Dorsey and Shamburger were a part of one of the best defenses in Commodore history that allowed just 14 goals in 21 games. They each started all 21 games this season, and they finished as the top two Commodores in minutes played this season.

Jackson started all 21 games this season as a midfielder. The junior tied for third on the team in points with 12. She was third on the team with five goals, and she also added two assists.

Hopkins and Jackson became First Team All-SEC selections, with Dorsey earning a Second Team All-SEC nod. Hopkins and Shamburger were the two Commodores named to the All-Freshman team.

Vanderbilt (16-4-1) finished the season with the third-most wins in program history after winning its third SEC regular season championship and first since 1994. Vanderbilt finished undefeated at home and engineered a 16-game unbeaten streak overall. Head coach Darren Ambrose was named SEC Coach of the Year at season’s end.
