Vandy finishes tenth on opening day of Phill Hansel

Houston, Texas – The Vanderbilt swim team finished tenth overall concluding day one of the Phill Hansel Invitational.
 
The Commodores started Friday’s prelims off with the 500 Y freestyle with two Dores earning top 40 finishes, advancing to the finals. Freshman Abby Burke earned eighteenth place in the final round swimming a stellar time of 4:54.68. This time earned the freshman the new freshman record for the 500 Y freestyle beating Kathryn Babbin’s 2014 record time of 4:55.51.
 
Sophomore Lara Hernandez-Tome placed thirty-ninth in the 500 Y freestyle swimming a time of 5:02.82 cutting over 4 seconds off her prelim time of 5:06.84. 
 
Heading into the second event of day one, eight Commodores took the pool to compete in the 200 Y IM with two Dores earning a second swim in the finals. In the final round, freshman Lizzy Colwell placed twenty-fifth swimming a time of 2:03.64 cutting her prelim time by over 2 seconds. 
 
Fellow freshman Lauren Thomas swam a time of 2:06.22 placing the Dore in thirty-fourth place of the event. 
 
Wrapping up individual races for opening day, five Dores competed in the final round of the 50 Y freestyle; Abby Burke, Kaley Buchanan, Tonner DeBeer, Madison Eaker and Johannah Goldblatt. 
 
Leading the Commodores, senior Johannah Goldblatt placed sixteenth in the B final with a time of 24 seconds even followed by freshman Tonner DeBeer earning twenty-first place in the C final with a time of 23.77 barely missing the freshman record time of 23.47 held by Goldblatt. 
 
Competing in her second final swim of the day, Burke earned twenty-third place swimming a 24.06 in the 50 Y freestyle followed by sophomore Kaley Buchanan earning thirty-eighth place and senior Madison Eaker placing fortieth for the Dores.
 
In relay competition, the Vanderbilt A relay earned top ten finishes in both the 200 Y freestyle relay as well as the 400 Y medley relay placing in sixth place for both events with times of 1:33.53 and 3:44.23 respectively. 
 
The Commodores look to rise in the standings tomorrow competing in the 200 Y medley relay, 400 Y IM, 100 Y fly, 200 Y free, 100 Y breast, 100 Y back and the 800 Y freestyle relay.
