Vanderbilt signs standout pair

NASHVILLE – Vanderbilt track and field head coach Steve Keith announced Wednesday that Kaira Brown (Somerset, New Jersey/Kent Place School) and Jada Sims (Phoenix, Arizona/Xavier College Preparatory) have signed a National Letter of Intent to continue their academic and athletic careers as Commodores.

Brown was the 400-meter champion at both the indoor and outdoor 2018 New Jersey State Meet of Champions. She boasts a personal-best 54.78 in the 400 and 24.86 in the 200.

“We are very excited that Kaira has chosen Vanderbilt,” said Keith. “Kaira is a great student and had great success in New Jersey. We look for Kaira to have an impact in the long sprints as well as the 4×400 relay.”

Sims specializes in the high jump and has a personal-best of 5-8 ¾ in the event. She placed first in the 2018 edition of the AAU Championships while taking second at the 2018 Arizona high school state championship.

“We are thrilled that Jada has decided to join our jumps crew,” said Keith. “Jada will be great addition in the high jump and should also contribute in the combined events.

“Adding these two is a great start to our recruiting class. We look forward to adding more quality student-athletes in the coming weeks and months.”

The Commodores start their indoor season at home on Dec. 1 when they plays host the annual Vanderbilt Opener at the Vanderbilt Recreation and Wellness Center.
