Commodores remain undefeated in June Stewart

NASHVILLE- The Vanderbilt women’s tennis team began day two of the June Stewart Invitational taking on Texas Tech in singles play, in which every Dore dominated her match to continue the Commodores’ undefeated streak at the invitational.

All eight Dores competed in singles play and clinched straight-set wins. Senior Fernanda Contreras defeated Texas Tech’s Stocia in a 6-1, 6-4 win while fellow senior Summer Dvorak owned the court in a 6-1, 6-1 victory against Texas Tech’s Miller.

Vanderbilt sophomore Lauren Gish earned her second individual win of the tournament by competing against Dilaura. Gish defeated Dilaura in a 6-2, 6-2 win followed by Amanda Meyer earning a 6-4, 6-4 win against Bridgforth.

Christina Rosca took on Tech’s Peet and secured a 6-1, 6-2 match, while Carolyn Campana defeated Texas Tech’s Rush in the first set, 6-2, then won by default in the second set after Rush retired. The result earned the freshman her second individual victory of the invitational.

The Commodores carried momentum into doubles play where they once again swept the courts with all Dore duos earning victories against their opponents.

Contreras competed in doubles with Carolyn Campana and helped earn the pair their first victory of the fall season, defeating Georgia Tech’s Lin/Deminova, 6-1.

Veteran duo Rosca/Dvorak kept up their season success as a doubles tandem in taking on Georgia Tech’s top seed Jones/Said. The Commodores conquered the court in a 6-4 win.

Maintaining the winning streak for the Dores, Smith and Gish defeated Lipscomb’s Buberl and Bandy, 7-6 (5) while Emma Kurtz and Amanda Meyer closed doubles play by adding another victory to the day for the Dores. Kurtz and Meyer  dominated Middle Tennessee State’s Burrows/Herrero, 6-4.

“We focused on mixing the lineup around today to give different people different opportunities and I am very pleased with how the team adjusted and performed on the courts. They were ready to compete, played with confidence and earned very strong wins. Everyone is working very hard in practice and it really paid off today,” said Vanderbilt head coach Geoff Macdonald.

The Dores look to close out the June Stewart on Sunday as they take on Texas Teach in doubles play and cap the invitational against MTSU in singles.

Sunday’s matches being at 9 a.m. with the Dores competing in their first event at 11 a.m. The finally day of the June Stewart Invitational will be held at Vanderbilt’s Currey Tennis Center, admission is free.
