Vanderbilt, OSU tangle at The Hawk

NASHVILLE – Vanderbilt is set to host Oklahoma State for a pair of informal scrimmages this weekend at Hawkins Field. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. on Saturday and 11 a.m. on Sunday with free admission set for both days.

The first 100 fans on Saturday will receive a Vanderbilt pint glass and the first 100 fans on Sunday will be provided a VandyBoys car flag. Both matchups will be streamed live (audio) on vucommodores.com as well as through the TuneIn app.

The format will include four quarters of seven innings during the weekend. The squads will play two quarters (14 innings) on Saturday and two quarters (14 innings) on Sunday. After each quarter, the score will be reverted back to 0-0.

The scoring system (all worth one point unless noted):

  • Defense accounts for a 1-2-3 Inning
  • Defense accounts for a 12-pitch inning
  • Defense does not allow a free base (HBP, BB, WP, PB, BK or ERROR) in an inning
  • Defense turns double play
  • Offense – RBI
  • Offense – Run Scored

The inning is flipped automatically after 25 pitches and one point will be rewarded for every runner left in scoring position. The team with the highest amount of points after seven innings wins that quarter.

TALKIN’ ABOUT PRACTICE
In April, the NCAA Division I Council adopted sweeping changes, including allowing teams to play fall exhibition games without them counting against the 56-game spring schedule.

This is the first time since 2011 VU has played an opponent during the fall. That year, Vandy took on the Texas in a pair of 12-inning games from Austin, winning 7-2 on Oct. 15 and falling 7-5 on Oct. 17.

DORES & COWBOYS
Vanderbilt and Oklahoma State have met just once in the history of the two programs. VU downed the Cowboys, 7-6 on Feb. 28, 2010 at Dodger Stadium. Aaron Westlake went 2-for-4 with a two-run double and two-run home run and Curt Casali added two hits.

HOME FOR THE HOLLIDAYS
Oklahoma State head coach Josh Holliday served three seasons (2010-12) as an assistant and recruiting coordinator at Vanderbilt.

As a member of Tim Corbin’s staff, Holliday helped the Commodores to three NCAA Tournaments, including VU’s 2011 College World Series squad. As recruiting coordinator, the Commodores landed the 12th-ranked incoming class in his first season and signed a 13-member, top-ranked class in 2011.
