Commodores head to Ohio Valley ITA Regionals

Nashville – The Vanderbilt women’s tennis team travels across the state to Chattanooga, Tennessee to compete in the 2018 ITA Regional tournament Thursday, Oct. 11 at the Champions Club.

The tournament includes 22 schools from around the region to compete in a 128-singles main draw along with 64-doubles main draw. Matches begin Thursday and conclude with the championship rounds set to take place Monday, Oct. 15.

Last season at regionals, the Dores earned spots in the semifinal round in both singles and doubles play before falling short of the championship rounds. This season, the Dores are looking to change that.

“Last year I didn’t have any expectations because I had never played the tournament before, so this year I’m looking to keep the expectations low and just play my strongest tennis,” said sophomore Amanda Meyers, who marks her second year competing in the regional tournament.

“My game has developed a lot since the previous regionals. I hope to continue to learn and develop in this year’s tournament. I’m hoping to get in as much match play and competition as possible before the regular season begins,” said Meyers.

Entering the tournament, three Dores rank among the top eight seeds in singles play with junior Christina Rosca set as the No. 1 seed in the main draw. Sophomore Amanda Myer and senior Summer Dvorak are also ranked coming in as the No. 3 seed and No. 4 seed respectively.

Rosca is looking forward to the tournament focusing on playing her best tennis. “I’m honestly not too focused on the seeding,” Rosca said. “There are many talented players in this tournament so every match will be tough.”

“I’m hoping to work on advancing more in my matches and respecting the difficulty of the game throughout the weekend, improving with every match I play. I am looking forward to seeing how we all compete this weekend,” said Rosca.

Thursday’s matches open up with the main draw of doubles play where two Commodore doubles pairs are ranked among the top-five seeds. Rosca and Dvorak enter the tournament ranked as the No. 2 seed followed by duo Emily Smith and Amanda Myer ranked as the No. 4 seed.

Following round one of doubles play, the Dores will compete in the first round of singles play and conclude the day with the Round of 32 in doubles play.
