Vanderbilt Falls to Belmont

NASHVILLE – Vanderbilt’s Chelsie Hall scored a career-high 26 points, for her second career game of 20 points, but Belmont shot 57.8 (36-of-64) and drilled 15 triples to earn a 111-74 win over the Commodores on Thursday afternoon at Memorial Gym.

How It Happened
First Quarter: Belmont 25, Vanderbilt 17
Rachel Bell was the spark in the first quarter as she scored 7 of Vanderbilt’s first 10 points but back-to-back treys gave the visitors a 12-7 lead forcing a Vanderbilt timeout. Chelsie Hall drilled a three out of the timeout to cut the lead back to one possession but Belmont was on fire from long range going 5-of-10 from three-point range with Darby Maggard going a perfect 4-of-4 from behind the arc. With Belmont leading 15-10, Kayla Overbeck completed a three-point play to shift the momentum to the home team but Belmont used back-to-back threes from Maggard to take an eight-point lead late in the quarter to open a 26-17 quarter lead.

Second Quarter: Belmont 57, Vanderbilt 33
Vanderbilt was able to get as close as four points in the opening minute of the second quarter. Erin Whalen drilled a three-pointer at the 6:12 mark and Kayla Overbeck made a defensive play on the other end to give the ball back to Vanderbilt, who capitalized with a Hall three-point play. In all, the Dores used an 8-0 run to cut the game to one possession and force a Belmont timeout. The Bruins wouldn’t go without a fight and used a 22-2 run out of the break to pull ahead, 57-33 at the end of the quarter.

Third Quarter: Belmont 81, Vanderbilt 61
Chelsie Hall ended a 3:30 minute scoring drought for the Dores after the break with an early layup but Belmont maintained the lead. Erin Whalen was a third quarter spark off the bench with back-to-back triples to keep the Commodore offense going but the defense couldn’t get many stops of the Bruins. Rebounding was crucial in the contest as the Bruins held a 47-17 advantage. Despite outscoring the visitors, 28-24 in the quarter, Belmont lead by 20 heading into the fourth quarter.

Fourth Quarter: Belmont 111, Vanderbilt 74
Belmont’s lead swelled to 30 points midway through the fourth quarter forcing a Vanderbilt timeout. The Bruins shot 68.8 percent in the fourth quarter and held Vanderbilt to just 13 points. The visitors utilized a 16-11 run over the final 4:59 to pick up their 10th win of the season and give Vanderbilt its fourth consecutive loss.

Inside the Lane
-With 15 points Rachel Bell moves into a tie with Rhonda Blades for the No. 34 spot on Vanderbilt’s all-time scoring list with 1,017 career points.

-Bell’s 15 points gives her double figures for the fifth straight game – the most consecutive for a Commodore player this year.

-Chelsie Hall recorded her second career game of 20+ with a career-best points

-Belmont earns its first win over Vanderbilt in the last nine tries. Vanderbilt had won the previous eight meetings prior today’s game.

-Kayla Overbeck recorded double figures for the second consecutive game with 11 points
