BATON ROUGE, La. – The Vanderbilt soccer team picked up its first shutout in SEC play this season.

But the Commodores could not scratch across a goal either in a scoreless tie to LSU on the road on Friday night. Sophomore goalkeeper Christiana Ogunsami made six saves for her third shutout of the season as Vanderbilt picked up its second straight tie.

Still, the Commodores salvaged an all important point. Through five league games the ‘Dores (5-5-3, 1-2-2 SEC) have five points for 10th place in the SEC standings.

“It was a fairly uneventful game overall,” Vanderbilt coach Darren Ambrose said. “I thought we clearly had the better of the game in the first half. They had the better of the second. Though we defended very well we lacked any kind of punch in the final third. They sat a lot of players behind the ball and we struggled to break them down, which was disappointing.

“It’s good to see a shutout, but I think the team overall is disappointed to not walk away with three points.”

Vanderbilt controlled the tempo in the first half with three shots and seven corner kicks. LSU (7-3-3, 1-3-1) didn’t muster a corner kick until the second half and was outgained in that category 12-5. The Tigers, however, had eight shots after halftime and won the shooting battle 11-7.

Only one Vanderbilt shot by redshirt sophomore Lydia Simmons was on goal. The Tigers put six shots on goal but Ogunsami stopped all six.

The Commodores return home to Nashville after just one game this weekend. They are back in action and back on the road at 6:30 p.m. (CST) on Friday when they play Kentucky in Lexington, Ky. They wrap up the weekend next Sunday at home against Arkansas.
