No. 7 `Dores can't pull off road win over 10th-ranked A&M

COLLEGE STATION, Texas – The No. 7 Vanderbilt women’s tennis team couldn’t push its win streak to eight, as the Commodores fell 4-2 to No. 10 Texas A&M, Sunday on the road at the Mitchell Tennis Center.

The Aggies took the early lead after winning the doubles point at No. 2 and No. 3. After falling at No. 3, Vandy’s No. 2 team of 50th-ranked Ashleigh Antal and Marie Casares lost a tight battle 8-6 to A&M’s Deheza and Gavrilovska.

Vanderbilt’s (10-4, 3-1 SEC) top doubles team of 36th-ranked Lauren Mira and Courtney Colton went unfinished leading 6-4.

In singles play the Aggies jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead with wins at No. 1 and No. 2. Georgina Sellyn fell at the top postion to No. 15 Cristina Stancu, 6-4, 6-0. Sydney Campbell, who was playing in just her second match after coming back from an injury, lost at No. 2 to No. 57 Saska Gavrilovska 6-3, 6-3.

The Commodores got on the board with wins from Casares and Frances Altick.

Casares extended her match win streak to 16 with a 7-2, 7-5 win at the No. 6 position. Altick posted her 11th dual win of the season with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Stefania Hristov at No. 3.

Colton, playing at No. 4 singles won her first set 6-2 over No. 118 Anna Mamalat, but the A&M player was able to fight back and take the next two sets 6-4, 6-1 to clinch the match for the Aggies.

Mira went unfished at No. 5 singles. She was down 4-5 in the second set after winning 7-5 in the first.

The Commodores will be on the road again next weekend, with trips to Ole Miss (Fri.) and Mississippi State (Sun.). Following those matches it’ll be back to Nashville for a match with Tennessee on March 21.
