SMYRNA, Tenn. – Vanderbilt had a roller-coaster day but managed to finish third after 12 games in this power-packed tournament and made the championship bracket of tomorrow’s Columbia 300 Music City Classic. Nineteen of the nation’s top 20 teams are competing.
The Commodores will face fourth place Maryland-Eastern Shore while top seed Fairleigh Dickinson will play Arkansas State on the other side. Games begin Sunday at 8:30, Central Daylight Time.
Saturday’s Vandy action included nice wins over No. 3 rated Maryland-Eastern Shore and 15th ranked McKendree. However, the `Dores were upset by several teams that were white-hot at just the right time. Delaware State posted an 1,104 score and a few hours later, Long Island rallied with 17 strike balls in a 19 ball period between the eighth and tenth frames to come from behind and win. A flat-looking Vandy dropped their last match of the day to Monmouth. All three losses came to teams having their best score of their day.
One of Vanderbilt’s most consistent bowlers during the day was junior Nicole Mosesso, who tried to make sense of the curious day.
“It was a day of up and downs,” Mosesso said. “We are still waiting to have a complete day. We had some good moments such as coming back to beat UMES by over a 100 pins. We might have gotten a bit too content with where we were and when we lost that game to Long Island I think that game beat us twice. We didn’t respond against Monmouth.”
Regarding the extreme fluctuations many teams experienced with their scores, Mosesso thought changing lane conditions had much to do with it.
“The lanes appears to get tighter after reoiling (done at the intermission) and with that our carry went away. With that went our scores and our energy. It became a grind out there. We know tomorrow is important; our goal is to come out and enjoy the challenge.”

The Commodores posted a plus number but you can’t play defense and the Hornets were stinging the lanes like national champs. At one point in the seventh through ninth frames Delaware State had 11 strikes in 12 frames, ending with its lead-off bowler crafting a 262 and all five north of 200. Vandy bowled relatively clean with just three opens; a case of the wrong opponent at the wrong time. DSU’s score was within five pins of the best game of the tournament.

Two of the nation’s top teams struggled with 11 opens each but Mosesso’s brilliant 248, closing with eight in a row, was a huge boost for Vandy. It was a close match most of the way but Vandy finished stronger. Not only did Mosesso go off the sheet but Poss doubled in the tenth and Goodman’s 236 was evidence she was dialed in all the way.

Vandy was chugging along with a 40-plus pin lead midway through this one when Clark Kent went into the phone booth and came out Superman, or Wonder Woman to be more precise. From the eighth frame through deep into the 10th, the Blackbirds rolled 17 strikes in 19 balls at one point while the Commodores had four open frames during the same stretch. It is not hard to spell u-p-s-e-t with those combinations.

With its big guns silent, Vandy had few answers for Monmouth’s top game of the tournament, which had come into the game in the bottom half of the standings. An error-filled start put the `Dores down 50 quickly and that margin swelled to well over 100 much of the match. Vandy made a comeback attempt led by Poss’ six-bagger to close with a 233 and Reguero’s five in a row salvaged a 201 but it was way too little, too late to turn around a disappointing afternoon.
