SMYRNA, Tenn. – Vanderbilt sits in second place in the big field of 29 after the first day of the Columbia 300 Music City Classic. The Commodores trail Fairleigh Dickinson in this event that features 19 of the nation’s top 20 rated teams.
Vandy went 5-1 on the day, which included victories over North Carolina A&T, Wisconsin-Whitewater, Kutztown, Howard and Sacred Heart and a loss to Saint Francis University.
“It was generally a good day for us,” said Coach John Williamson, “but once again it seems we can’t quite get through a complete day without a glitch. But during the course of the day everyone made a contribution. I thought Tori (Ferris) did a very good job off the bench.”
Vanderbilt seized the team lead in the quad-Baker play after the second round and held it most of the day until FDU sizzled in the final two games to move into first. The Commodores began with a lineup of Nicole Mosesso, Giselle Poss, Rebeca Reguero, Natalie Goodman and Robyn Renslow. After two games Ferris was inserted for Poss and throughout the day Goodman and Renslow rotated between the fourth and fifth spots.
“We were just trying to find the right pieces with those shifts,” Williamson explained, “and it seemed that the two alternated between who had the best look at the time.”
Reguero mostly liked what she saw during the day.
“We had the one hiccup but bounced back well,” she said. “We had two great practices leading up to today and I thought this was our most complete day with all five of us in a while. Tori was great all day.”
Ferris said she entered the day with a plan.
“I was ready if needed,” the sophomore said. ” I focused on staying relaxed and not over-thinking, trying to throw good shots. I got into the groove after two games and was happy with my day. I only missed two makeable spares. We were enjoying being here and playing together. We didn’t overthink things and stayed in the moment.”

Lineup: Mosesso, Poss, Reguero, Goodman, Renslow. The `Dores changed lineups for the third game with Ferris going into the two spot and Goodman and Renslow trading places in the order. That seemed to help pick things up as VU had six in a row in that third game.

Lineup: No changes. The Commodores bowled well with all four games north of 200. Whitewater closed game 2 with four in a row but Goodman blunted that by striking out. In the third game, Vandy had a five-bagger from the fourth to eighth frame before ending with a pair of opens. Ferris was giving the team a nice boost, Mosesso seemed dialed in at leadoff. Vandy seized the tourney lead after this round.

Lineup: No changes. Vandy kept steady pressure on the 11th rated Bears, bowling a clean second game for go up 50 pins. Goodman struck out again in the third to give VU an 88-pin cushion heading into the last game. The spare conversion of the day, and possibly the year, came with Reguero picking up the 7-8-10 in the third frame, giving the home fans something to remember.

Lineup: No changes except that Goodman and Renslow swapped spots in the order, Renslow at anchor. It was the first-place team against the last-place team and didn’t produce many fireworks It felt as though the Commodores were losing some energy but they rallied in the fourth game to produce another 800-plus effort.

Lineup: No changes. It was Vandy’s poorest results of the day; after grabbing a temporary lead in the first game, SFU more or less dominated the match. VU began the third game with three opens in five frames and didn’t fare a lot better in the fourth game.
