HOUSTON, TX—Vanderbilt won four of its six games Friday and with its accumulated pin count is high on the leader board after the first day of Sam Houston State’s Kat Klash.
Repeating a season-long trend, the Commodores started slowly in dropping back-to-back games to No. 1 rated Arkansas State and No. 9 Wisconsin-Whitewater. However, they bounced back nicely with consecutive wins over Alabama-Birmingham, Long Island, St. Francis and Louisiana Tech.
Junior Natalie Goodman, who once again was bowling in the anchor position, credited a pep talk from classmate Nicole Mosesso for the turn-around.
“After a slow start we picked it up,” Goodman said afterward, “and Nicole had a lot to do with that. She jumped into our huddle at one point and reminded us that one of our objectives was to have fun and keep it light. We took her advice and that was a turning point.”
The Commodores posted the best 4-game Baker set of the day, an 892 score against St. Francis in Game 5. They used a rotation most of the day of Mosesso, Amanda Fry, Robyn Renslow, Rebeca Reguero and Goodman, who identified Reguero as the team’s bowler of the day.
“She was amazing all day,” Goodman said, “and really made it easy for me bowling behind her.”
