ARLINGTON, TX—Robyn Renslow reminded everyone why she is an All-American and Rebeca Reguero scored big at the right time as Vanderbilt won four of five games and secured a berth in the title bracket of the Prairie View Invitational.
Renslow, a second-team All-America choice last year as a freshman, was remarkably consistent at a high level, producing scores of 248-190-235-225-224 as Vanderbilt downed four foes including handing Sam Houston State its first tournament loss. Renslow’s total pin count of 1,122 won the individual tournament.
“When Robyn gets into the mindset she had today she is as good as anyone in the country,” Coach John Williamson said.
Reguero came off the bench in the third game and immediately provided a spark with a 214 effort against Jackson State. But the Arizona junior was firing on all cylinders in the next match, where she threw strikes and filled every frame in crafting a 244 – a collegiate career high – that was the key in the Sam Houston win.
“Rebeca has been coming into her own the past two weeks,” Williamson says. “She is repeating shots, the ball is coming off her hand easy and she is putting herself in a position to see more playing time.”
Vanderbilt moved up an important notch in the team standings as a result of the increased pin fall and finished the day fourth, making the championship bracket along with team leader Arkansas State, Nebraska and Sam Houston. Vandy will face No. 1 seed Arkansas State in the bracket with Nebraska and Sam Houston in the 2-3 match.
“For the most part I thought we played pretty good,” Williamson said afterwards. “Things changed from game to game but most of the time we had answers.”
Bowl.com will live stream the finals, starting at 8:30 (CST) Sunday morning. There will be three, best of seven Baker matches as has been the norm with NCAA bowling. Prior to the start of the bracket, each team has a non-counting game to round out round-robin play. The Commodores will play Stephen F. Austin.
