GREENVILLE, S.C. – After Saturday’s action the Vanderbilt women’s tennis team is set up to play in five singles championships on Sunday at the Furman Fall Classic. Vandy’s three doubles teams in flighted competition each won, with two clinching flight championships.
“I’m really pleased with the way we are competing,” said Vandy head coach Geoff Macdonald. “We played extremely well in all of our matches this year. Even in the losses we competed and played well.”
Sydney Campbell and Ashleigh Antal started the morning off winning their flight doubles championship, 8-4, over Speilman and Zabor of Alabama.
“Sydney and Ashleigh played very well once again,” Macdonald said. “Ashleigh saved the match point. It was a great character win for them.”
Francis Altick and Marie Casares were also able to lock up a doubles championship winning Flight three over Blanco and Maynetto of Alabama.
In singles play the Commodores won five of their eight matches, with all five wins advancing to Sunday’s finals. Campbell highlighted singles play with a convincing win over two-time All-American Mary Ann Daines of Alabama, 6-3, 6-1.
“Thats a great win [for Sydney] over a top-tier player,” said Macdonald. “She has played very will through the tournament, I’m very pleased with how she is competing and handling herself on the court.”
