Dores and Cowgirls play to 2-2 draw

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – An equalizer in the 70th minute prevented the Vanderbilt women’s soccer from beating visiting Oklahoma State Sunday, as the two teams played for the full 110 minutes in a 1-1 draw despite the Commodores holding a 24-16 advantage in shots on the afternoon.

Freshman Krystina Iordanou and senior Abby Carr tallied goals for the Commodores. Iordanou’s goal came off a Vanderbilt free kick in the 21st minute. Sophomore Erin Myers served a ball from near midfield, and Iordanou rose at the top of the six-yard box to slash a header inside the near post.

Eleven minutes later, Carr would notch the ‘Dores second tally of the day. After sophomore Cheyna Williams was pulled down inside OSU’s penalty box, Carr stepped up and calmly finished a penalty kick less than a minute after she had subbed into the game.

The Commodores held a 12-6 advantage in shots during the second half, and a 5-3 lead during the two overtime periods. OSU goalkeeper Rosa Medina was credited with 11 saves. The Cowgirls also recorded a team save on a header from VU freshman Simone Charley in the 93rd minute. Freshman Olivia Liebman, making her first career start, stooped eight OSU shots.

The Cowgirls took a 1-0 lead in the game’s eighth minute when Courtney Dike took a through ball from Madison Mercado and chipped over an attacking Liebman. Trailing 2-1 in the second half, OSU would tie the game when Dike headed home a corner kick from Allie Stephenson.

Vanderbilt will play its first road contest of 2013 on Friday, August 30, traveling to face Memphis at 7 p.m. CT. The Commodores will then return home to play host to Rice on Sunday, Sept. 1, at 7 p.m. CT.
