SEC day one sees Cannon tie school record

COLUMBIA, Mo. — Freshman Jennifer Cannon started off action at the 2013 SEC Outdoor Track & Field Championships with a bang, tying a school record in the 100 meter hurdles. The Bristol, Tenn., native stands in seventh place in the heptathlon through four events.

Cannon ran the 100 meter hurdles in 13.51 seconds, tying a 10-year-old school record held by Amanda Mullins-Hall. Cannon placed second in the event, earning 1,049 points towards her score.

She followed that up by tying for sixth in the high jump, clearing 1.64 meters (5′ 4.5″) and earning 783 points. The jump matched Cannon’s top outdoor clearance of the year.

The third event was the shot put, where Cannon was 14th with a throw of 9.69 meters (31′ 9.5″). The first day of action concluded with 200 meters, where Cannon earned 891 points for a fifth place finish with a time of 24.95.

The freshman stands in seventh place with 3,232 points and three events (long jump, javelin and 800 meters) remaining. Arkansas’ Makeba Alcide leads the field with 3,756 points. Cannon has the top score in the meet by a freshman.

Resumption of the heptathlon kicks of day two of the league championships on Friday, May 10, at Noon CT. Commodores will also see action in the 800 meter preliminaries (6:30 p.m.), the 400 meter hurdle preliminaries (7:40 p.m.) and the 10,000 meter finals (8:45 p.m.).
