Jumper highlights Yellow Jacket Invite

ATLANTA — The Vanderbilt track and field team competed at the Yellow Jacket Invitational on Saturday, March 30, highlighted by Hannah Jumper taking a win in the 1,500 meters.

Jumper was one of five Commodores to run in the 1,500, crossing the line in a personal best of 4:30.44 to win the event. Vanessa Valentine was ninth in 4:39.11, followed by Amira Joseph in 12th at 4:41.27, Rebecca Chandler in 15th at 4:42.49 and Marika Crowe in 28th at 5:08.38. In addition to Jumper, Valentine, Joseph and Chandler all ran personal records.

“Hannah was dominant in her heat, just really impressive,” said Assistant Coach Clark Humphreys.

Faith Washington ran a personal best in the 400 meters, finishing sixth in 55.47. It marked the fourth-fastest 400 time in program history.

The 800 meters saw a pair of Commodores finish second and third. Sara Barron ran a time of 2:11.23 to finish second, while Lily Williams was right behind her in third at 2:13.07. Grace Corbett was 19th n 2:27.57.

Jennifer Cannon was the top finisher from a school in the 100 meter hurdles, finishing in 14.24. She was fourth overall. Janetra Gleaves was sixth and the third finisher from a collegiate team, posting a time of 14.48.

Vanderbilt’s 4×400 meter relay team of Ellie Tidman, Cannon, Washington and Gleaves finished fifth, posting a park of 3:56.21. Humphreys was very proud of what he called a “pieced-together” group.

On the field side, Brionne Williams and Tidman finished fifth and sixth in the high jump. Williams cleared 1.78 meters (5′ 10″), while Tidman cleared 1.65 meters (5′ 5″).

“Brionne and Ellie were up against four other national qualifiers from the indoor season and held her own,” Humphreys said.

Morgan Toone and Alyson Hasty were fifth and seventh in the pole vault, respectively. Toone cleared 3.55 meters (11′ 7.75″), while Hasty was over 3.40 meters (11′ 1.7″).

Cannon placed eighth in the long jump at 5.39 meters (17′ 8.25″), while Gleaves and Cannon were ninth and tenth in the shot put, respectively.

Several members of the men’s cross country team competed at the event. John Ewing paced the Commodores with a 12th place finish in the 5,000 meters (15:20.11). Matthew Cleveland (15:23.69), Alan Ash (15:43.23) and Nick French (15:45.77) also ran the 5K. Ash also ran the 800 meters, finishing in 2:03.12.

The Commodores will go split-squad for their next weekend of competition (April 5-6). Some athletes will head to Gainesville, Fla., and the Florida Relays, while others will head to William & Mary in Williamsburg, Va., for the Colonial Relays.
