Three Vanderbilt women’s tennis players were in action on Friday. Sophomore Georgina Sellyn played her first round consolation match at the USTA/ITA National Indoor Championships in New York, while both Sydney Campbell and Courtney Coltonwere in action at the Dick Vitale Intercollegiate Clay Court Classic.

Sellyn advanced to the second round of the consolation draw with a win over No. 74 Danielle Collins of Virginia. The match started on serve for both players, with Sellyn taking the quick 2-1 advantage. Collins then suffered an injury and was forced to retire, giving Sellyn the automatic bid to the next round.

The native of Glasgow, Scotland will take on third-ranked Lauren Herring of Georgia in the consolation quarterfinals at 10 a.m., central time.

At the Dick Vitale Classic, Campbell and Colton teamed up for two doubles wins. In their first match of the day the duo defeated Kitchen and Whitehead from Auburn, 8-4. They then went on to win their quarterfinal match 8-3, over Ferancova and Guibe of Mississippi State.

“It was a really good first day for us,” said VU assistant coach Aleke Tsoubanos. “We had to work through the first doubles match, which was expected since it was Sydney and Courtney’s first time playing together. I thought they did a good job adjusting to the clay in those early matches.”

Campbell and Colton will open Saturday’s action with the doubles semifinals against Kourtney Keegan and Brianna Morgan of Florida. That match will begin at 8 a.m., central time.

The freshman Campbell played just as well in her singles matches, finishing the day 2-0 and looking ahead to Saturday’s quarterfinals.

“Sydney was competing for the first time in a a few weeks so she had to shake some rust off in the first match,” said Tsoubanos. “She adjusted really well when she had to which was a big step for her. It was a lot of tennis for her today, and I am very happy with how she handled it.”

Campbell won her opening match, 6-3, 7-6 (3) over Ana Gerbasi of East Tennessee State and then knocked off Sivan Krems of Princeton 6-1, 6-3 in the second round.

The Franklin, Tenn., native will face the Gators’ Morgan in the quarters following the morning doubles matches.
