Bowlers Open in Fifth Place

Nov. 1, 2013

SADDLE BROOK, NJ—Vanderbilt was in fifth place after the first day of the New Jersey Jamboree, winning two games and losing two in the quad-Baker format.

The second-rated Commodores opened with a nine-pin loss to Maryland-Eastern Shore, then rebounded with wins over Salem International and Sacred Heart before closing the competitive afternoon with another narrow lose to Stephen F. Austin.

“We struggled with tightness, especially early in the afternoon,” said Coach John Williamson. “We got better as the day progressed but we didn’t seem to be ourselves. We missed seven makeable spares in that close game with Stephen F. Austin. We couldn’t seem able to relax; and weren’t able to execute when games were on the line but we feel confident that we will come back strong tomorrow.”

Vanderbilt had a five-game pin count (the fifth game of 806 was in a bye situation) of 3,769 to trail first round leader Stephen F. Austin by 170 pins. Host FDU is second, Arkansas State third in the 20 team field.

The Commodores appeared to be cruising to an opening win in the UMES game but sputtered down the stretch. In the loss to SFA, Vandy experienced wild scores swings ranging from over 230 to under 130.

“I thought Nicole Mosesso had a very good day,” Williamson said, “she averaged 210 in her frames. I was also pleased with Giselle Poss in her college debut; Giselle looked a little nervous at the start but she settled down and bowled very well most of the day.”

Vanderbilt tinkered with its lineup as expected. In the first game, the rotation was Natalie Goodman, Amanda Fry, Tori Ferris, Poss and Robyn Renslow. Mosesso came in the second game, replacing Ferris and for two games it was Mosesso, Fry, Goodman, Poss and Renslow.

Saturday’s play consists of two sessions of three traditional games with the morning set starting at 7:30 CT. Vandy’s three morning matches are with Jersey City, Valparaiso and Fairleigh Dickinson.
