Vandy drops final road contest to Auburn, 2-1

AUBURN, Ala. – Gena Inbusch’s shot to tie the game in the 86th minute hit the post, and Auburn hung on to beat the Vanderbilt women’s soccer team, 2-1, Sunday afternoon at the Auburn Soccer Complex.

“This is a very disappointing loss,” said Vandy head coach Derek Greene. “When you look at the scores in our SEC games, we are closing the gap from last season, but when we lose because we aren’t playing hard enough its extremely disappointing.”

Vandy falls to 4-11-3 and 1-8-1 in the SEC with the loss, while Auburn improves to 6-8-4 and 2-5-3.

Cherrelle Jarrett scored the equalizer for the `Dores in the the 73rd minute off the assist from Jamie Kator. On the corner kick, Kator sent the ball into the box to Jarrett who shot the ball low, past the Auburn keeper who tried to punch the ball out.

Auburn would scored the eventual game-winner in the 75th minute on a fast break goal by Tori Ball.

Inbusch would almost tie the game for the `Dores in the 86th minute, when she ripped a shot off the post. Vandy got one more opportunity to tie the game, in the final minute of play, when Kator took a shot that went wide of the net.

Vandy managed only seven shots in the game, with Jarrett’s goal being the lone shot on goal. Auburn took 16 shots, with five making it on the net.

“We’ve been very inconsistent the past three to four weeks,” said Greene. “I take responsibility for our inconsistency and we will get it corrected moving forward with the program.”

Olivia Liebman made the start in goal for the Commodores, after seeing the majority of time off the bench against South Carolina, Friday.

“Olivia performed really well for us today,” Greene said. “We’ve had her on the bench the past few games and we decided to give her the start tonight and she stepped it up and made some great saves to keep us in the game. That was big for us.”

Vanderbilt will close out the season on Thursday, October 31 at 6 p.m., against Tennessee. Thursday’s Senior Night celebrations will begin at 5:40.
