NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Vanderbilt women’s tennis team wrapped up the third and final day of the June Stewart Invitational, Sunday, from the Currey Tennis Center going 3-0 in doubles play and 7-1 in singles. On the weekend the ‘Dores went 9-1 in doubles and 17-6 in singles.
Vandy was matched up with Indiana for the final doubles matches of the weekend. Just like with William & Mary and Georgia Tech, the Commodores made quick work of the Hoosiers.
“I thought we did really well in doubles,” said VU assistant coach Aleke Tsoubanos. “Indiana came out really aggressive early but I thought we neutralized really well. We had a good match at one, which got a bit hairy at times but Ashleigh and Sydney did good job of staying together and not allowing Indiana any runs.”
Lauren Mira and Georgina Sellyn paired up at the No. 3 position, while Marie Casares and Courtney Colton played at No. 2. Both teams cruised to victories over Indiana, each winning 8-2.
At No. 1 doubles Ashleigh Antal and Sydney Campbell were going toe-to-toe with Indiana’s No. 1 team before the Vandy duo took the last three games to seal the match, 8-4.
Vanderbilt faced its toughest match of the weekend in singles play, going up against Georgia Tech. However, the Commodores kept up their high level of play and defeated the Yellow Jackets in five of six matches.
“We came out kind of slow in singles,” Tsoubanos said. “Give Georgia Tech credit they battled but so did we and we found a way to get back into some matches.”
At No. 1 singles Sydney Campbell was able to bounce back from her Saturday loss and pick up the win in straight-sets 7-5, 6-0. Campbell got down early in the first set and when it looked like it would slipt away from her she battled back to win, before cruising in the second set.
Marie Casares continued her dominant play this weekend at No. 4 singles. Casares, who has been the first to finish in the previous two days finished first once again when Tech’s Muriel Wacker retired after being down 5-0 in the first.
“All three of Marie’s singles were great,” said Tsoubanos. “Every time she stepped on the court this weekend she was impressive. She didn’t have many unforced errors and just played great tennis.”
Frances Altick closed out Sunday’s action with a win at No. 2 over Natasha Prokhnevska. Altick, who has been playing at No. 4 all weekend, won 7-6, 5-7, 6-2.
Next up for the Commodores is the USTA/ITA Ohio Valley Regionals, which are set for next weekend and will be held on the campus of the University of Memphis.
