Tennis continues strong fall play at June Stewart

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Vanderbilt women’s tennis team continued its high level of play this fall in the second day of the June Stewart Invitational. The Commodores won three of four matches in doubles play and five of seven in singles.

In doubles, Vanderbilt showed determination and heart as they won three out four matches. The `Dores started strong against the Yellow Jackets. At No. 1 doubles, Ashleigh Antal and Sydney Campbell took control of the match early and never looked back, winning convincingly 8-4.

In a hard fought battle with Tech at the No. 2 position, the duo of Marie Casares and Courtney Colton proved to be victorious as well, 8-4.

Doubles action finished up with the highlight of the morning being Lauren Mira and Georgina Sellyn’s No. 3 doubles match, which lasted over an hour. The `Dores combo got down to the Jackets early, 4-1, but stormed their way back to force a tie-breaker at 7-all . The duo breezed through the tie break to pick up the win 7-3.

Picking up where they left off yesterday, the `Dores controlled singles play early with fast wins. Casares made quick work of the Tribe’s Nabila Farah at the No. 3 spot, winning quickly 6-1, 6-0 while teammate Frances Altick did much of the same at the No. 4 spot, routing the Tribe’s Julia Casselbury 6-2, 6-0 in another quick match.

Not very far behind, the `Dores’ Antal continued her dominant weekend play as she got off to a fast start and won at the No. 2 spot 6-0, 6-2. Taking on the Volunteers’ Victoria Olivarez at No. 6, Colton had no problems as she cruised to a 6-1, 6-1 victory.

The Commodores had a great comeback at the No. 5 spot as Mira showed much resiliency against the Tribe. In the first set, Mira had a long battle but lost 4-6 before winning both the second and third sets 6-0.

Vanderbilt will be back in action tomorrow at the Currey Tennis Center for the last day of the tournament, and will play doubles against Indiana, followed by singles against the Yellow Jackets. The Tribe will take on the Yellow Jackets in doubles, before matching up against the Hoosiers for singles. Doubles play for all teams will begin at 10a.m.
